The Studio Museum is looking for volunteers on Friday, June 14, 2019 to assist with disassembling Maren Hassinger: Monuments, an exhibition of eight site-specific sculptures installed since June 16, 2018 in Marcus Garvey Park. The sculptures in Monuments are made of branches, wood chips, and natural materials that respond to aspects of the park's landscape.

Volunteers have played an essential role in the creation of these large-scale works and their continued participation is an important final component to this project, which celebrates community. Prior art-making, gardening, or fabrication experience is helpful but not necessary! The volunteer shift will be followed by a pizza lunch with the exhibiting artist Maren Hassinger.

Responsibilities:

  • Remove branches from the wire grid that forms the armature of each sculpture
  • Separate branches from the plastic zip ties used to secure them in place
  • Assist with moving materials to designated locations in the park
  • Support Museum staff with set up and tear down
  • Additional support as needed

Expectations:

  • Volunteers will be required to sign a consent form; anyone under 18 must have their form signed by a parent/guardian before their shift.
  • Arrive promptly at the start time for a short orientation session and stay for duration of shift
  • Follow instructions and behave professionally
  • Wear appropriate clothing; pants and comfortable closed-toe shoes are required. Long sleeves are encouraged to prevent scratches.
  • Volunteers should feel comfortable using scissors and clippers as some manipulation of the branches may be required
  • Be able to lift at least 20 pounds and withstand several hours on their feet.

*Lunch: 1:30–2:30 pm
