This year, two participants in Expanding the Walls—an eight-month photography-based program at The Studio Museum in Harlem—were awarded The New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowship. This fellowship grants the recipients with additional professional experience and a scholarship for their postgraduate studies. We are excited to introduce the two fellows: Chess and Donnell. Congratulations!

Here are their responses on receiving The New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowship!

“Being accepted for the fellowship was an honor. Not only because I was picked and it meant a lot, but because of the program history. I feel so honored to be a part of an organization that a couple founded based on their love for the arts. I'm looking forward to what the New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowship has in store and in the process, I'm excited to meet amazing people and make beautiful memories. Can't wait to get started!” —Donnell

“The New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowship is a huge opportunity for extra structure and support within this program—it's an additional network of encouragement for me to explore the arts, even as the rest of my life is barreling forward. It's a reminder to me to pursue what I love, and it's recognition of an aspect of my life that usually gets brushed aside as just a hobby. I was so glad to get this opportunity, and after meeting my fellow scholars, I'm so glad to be part of this community. It's a connection between so many intriguing, brilliant, and aspiring artists. One day, I'll be able to look back and see how far a generation has come—and I can't wait.” —Chess
